Hungary Suffers Euro 2024 Opener Loss

Barnabás Vargas' Goal Not Enough to Overcome Switzerland

Hungary's Euro 2024 campaign got off to a disappointing start, as they succumbed to Switzerland in their opening match.

Despite taking the lead through a second-half header from Barnabás Vargas, Hungary was unable to hold on as Switzerland came back to win 2-1. The loss leaves Hungary bottom of Group A after the first round of fixtures.

Hungary began the match brightly and had the better of the chances in the opening stages. However, they were unable to make their dominance count, and it was Switzerland who took the lead against the run of play in the 35th minute. Ricardo Rodriguez scored a stunning free-kick to put the Swiss ahead.

Hungary equalized in the 66th minute when Vargas headed home from a corner. However, their joy was short-lived, as Switzerland regained the lead just five minutes later. Xherdan Shaqiri scored a superb individual goal to put the Swiss back in front, and Hungary was unable to find an equalizer in the remaining minutes.

The defeat is a major blow to Hungary's hopes of reaching the knockout stages of Euro 2024. They will need to improve their performance significantly if they are to have any chance of progressing from Group A.
